James Guest Confirmed as new First XI Captain

The 2023 campaign marks the start of another new era for Hale Barns Cricket Club as long-serving all-rounder James Guest takes over the First XI captaincy.

Having played in every team from Under-11s to the Firsts, Guest has established himself as an influential part of the club and progressed into a leadership position last season as vice-captain to Luke Skade, who steps down after a year in the role.

Here’s a message from the new HBCC skipper.

It’s an honour to take over the captaincy and I’m excited for the season ahead.

I’ve been at the club since I was nine years old – that’s almost 20 years now – and it’s something I hadn’t really thought about before, but now that I’ve been encouraged to take on the role, I’m chomping at the bit to get started.

I think I bloomed quite late as a senior player and I’m proud to be identified as the ideal person to lead the First Team and be club captain.

Captaining a few games last season helped me appreciate how difficult a job it is.

I want the lads to believe in their talent.

I’m leading a team with a lot of players who have come through the junior teams and the ones who have come from elsewhere have stayed for a while, so I think we’re a close-knit group who all share the same values on and off the field.

The minimum requirement I want to achieve by the time I step away from the role is to leave the team and the club in a better position than it is now.

I want to see some of the junior players progress and become regular First and Second Team cricketers because we have a great record of that in the current team and that’s crucial for a club of our size.

We finished on a real high last year and played some quality cricket.

There’s been a bit of a shake-up over the winter in terms of members on the committee and there are some new additions that are really keen to be proactive and make a substantial positive change on and off the field.

I’ve had a lot of help from Sanjeev (Bhatia) and Tommy (Smith) in planning for the season ahead and we’re confident with our vision of leading the club forward into the future.

Our overseas player for the season is Johnathon Aikins.

We lucked out with the fact that Sam Smith has been in Australia playing with him at Caulfield CC throughout the winter.

We’ve had a couple of departures over the offseason, but that provides an opportunity for others to step up and grab the headlines.

I think someone like Joe Mahon could really help to solidify the top order.

Hale Barns is a lovely club to be involved with, on and off the pitch.

Players stick around for many years here, and I think that speaks volumes about the ethos of the club.

For the many non-playing members who have been great supporters of the club over the years, I hope to see you again cheering on the team this season.

Dafedar Says Farewell With Unbeaten Ton

Hashir Dafedar struck his third unbeaten ton of the season in his farewell knock before returning to India to help Hale Barns First XI thrash Lymm Oughtrington Park by 169 runs.
Ben Hicks then added another landmark to his list of milestones in recent weeks by taking a sensational hat-trick as Barns blew their opponents away to climb up to third in the Cheshire Cricket League Division One.
Barns knew they’d have to pick up the pace of the innings early in a reduced overs game due to the wet weather and opener Chris Colley raced out of the blocks with a handful of boundaries.
Travis Scholes produced an early breakthrough with the score on 20-1, but Colley and Dafedar were in destructive form to put the hosts in a commanding position.
The pair added 129 for the second wicket as Colley approached his first century of the year until he was desperately unlucky to be run out by Matthew Bradshaw for a terrific 92 off 79 balls that included 11 fours and four sixes.
Bradshaw soon had a second run out to his name but Dafedar continued to play fluently, while he was joined at the crease by Hicks, who immediately displayed his attacking intent.
Their partnership worth 60 runs was broken by Scholes (2-65) when Hicks’ blistering cameo came to an end for 27 from just 14 deliveries as Barns took the total over 200 inside 30 overs.
And Dafedar capped things off by going to another century in his final innings for the club, eventually ending on a magnificent 106 not out as Hale set an unbelievable score of 244/4 from their 32 allotted overs.
In reply, the visitors were unscathed after two overs on 10-0, but in a dramatic turn of events, five wickets fell in nine deliveries to leave Lymm reeling on 10-5 inside just four overs.
Hicks maintained his stunning run of form over the past couple of months with an outrageous over as he removed three batters in three balls, to the dismay of hat-trick victim Nafees Din who was outraged to be adjudged lbw having been adamant he had inside edged the ball onto his pad.
After Hicks’ heroics, it was Dave Saddington’s (3-23) turn as he claimed two dismissals in the same over and the pair soon added another wicket each to the tally to send two more batsmen back to the pavilion to restrict the away side to 23-7.
Number nine batter Nick Chadbourne was the only player to offer any sort of meaningful resistance as he reached double figures, with he and Steve Knowles (9) putting on 37 runs together until Joe Fretwell-Walsh got in on the act.
Not many teams have found a way to prevent Hicks (5-37) racking up wickets of late and it was inevitable that he’d claim another five-wicket haul, while Fretwell-Walsh (2-7) finished the job to bowl Lymm out for just 75, with Chadbourne left stranded on 32 not out.
The emphatic result means promotion is a distinct possibility with Barns now just three points adrift of Stockport Georgians in second place with four games remaining.

Ben Hicks was back in the wickets as Hale Barns First XI finally got back to winning ways with a much-needed 36-run victory over Alvanley CC.
The quick left-armer is up to 24 dismissals in the league in 2021 following another dominant display with the ball, while Khurram Hussain marked his return to action after a month’s absence with a valuable 49.
Starting the day without a win since the start of May, Barns were short on confidence and suffered a difficult start when three early wickets fell, with Chris Charles taking two and Stephen Charles claiming the other.
Sanjeev Bhatia and Hussain steadied the ship, with the latter accumulating the bulk of the runs while Bhatia fought hard to see off the potent opening bowlers, working hard for his 7 off 49 deliveries before eventually succumbing to S Charles.
At 54-4, Hussain maintained his fluent scoring, with seven fours and a six steering him to within one run of a first half century of the season.
Luke Skade dug in well to stablise the innings, while Tom Saddington played a productive cameo, adding 19 runs in quick time, but two wickets for Matty Drury (2-15) put Alvanley in a commanding position.
And the return of C Charles dashed any hopes of a late surge as he doubled his tally to finish with figures of 4-37, including Skade for a patient 64-ball 23, meaning Barns were unable to gather any impetus in the closing stages of the innings, being bowled out for 120 in 47 overs.
The visitors made a promising start to their run chase, with Andy Bennion hitting five boundaries on his way to a rapid 22 from just 15 deliveries, although three quick wickets for Hicks shifted the momentum in HBCC’s favour.
Younas Saeed (1-35) got in on the act, and then Barns were suddenly in the driving seat as Hicks (5-33) ripped through the middle order to secure his third five-wicket haul of the campaign.
The introduction of spin led to further success as Joe Cooper (2-10) struck twice, while the pacey Sam Smith delivered the hammer blow by removing top order batsman S Charles, who had battled valiantly for his 28 off 70 balls.
And it was Smith (2-1) who completed the incredible fightback with the final dismissal as Alvanley slumped to 84 all out.

Mike Hunter hit a spectacular unbeaten century to lead Hale Barns Second XI to an emphatic victory over Upton CC at Brooks Drive.
Sanjeev Bhatia also produced an impressive knock, making 84, while Dave Saddington and Jack Wylie registered four dismissals apiece as the hosts cruised to 103-run win.
Barns sent out a fourth new opening pairing in successive matches, with Stew Reynolds and Bhatia facing up to the new ball with great success, rotating the strike particularly well early on.
A half century stand came in the 17th over and both appeared to be settling in for the day, but a stroke of luck for Upton saw the partnership broken on 62 when a mix up running between the wickets led to Reynolds being caught short of his ground for 38.
His departure only brought more torment for the visitors, however, as Hunter strode to the crease in confident mood and quickly found his scoring touch.
Bhatia significantly increased his scoring rate after reaching his milestone, striking six fours in the space of 10 deliveries to charge on to 84, although a momentary lapse in concentration proved to be his downfall as he was bowled 16 runs short of three figures, bringing a magnificent partnership of 129 to an end.
At 206-3 with 10 overs remaining, Barns were eyeing a declaration, while Hunter’s chances of becoming the first Second XI centurion since August 2019 were looking increasingly likely.
Captain Tom Entwistle chipped in with a handy 25 not out, but he was overshadowed by the brilliance of Hunter, who was able to celebrate an exceptional hundred off just 76 balls.
After HBCC declared on 262-3 with four overs to spare, Hunter left the field unbeaten on 101, which included 15 fours and a six.
In reply, Kevin Jackson showed some early intent with two boundaries and a maximum, but things quickly started to unravel when Wylie claimed two victims before Charles Mills (1-20) removed Jackson (16) to leave Upton struggling on 24-3.
Gavin Byrom offered some respite by adding 18 until succumbing to Saddington, while Adam Carney also provided reasonable resistance.
Visiting skipper Ian Sharrock was the pick of the Upton bowlers, and he dragged his side towards a respectable score with an array of excellent shots, finding the boundary on 13 occasions.
But shortly after celebrating a half century, his aggression finally proved costly as Callum Schora held on to a smart catch on the boundary off the bowling of Wylie, concluding his exciting innings on 56.
Saddington (4-26) put Barns on the brink of victory with a fourth wicket before Wylie (4-41) matched his tally to finish the job and cap off a clinical all-round display, leaving the away side all out for 159.

First XI Slip To Second Successive Defeat

Andrew Hopper led Hale Barns Second XI to a convincing six-wicket victory over Bollington CC by hitting his first half century for the club.
Younas Saeed and Jack Wylie both took three wickets to put Barns on top before Hopper took centre stage with an impressive knock that helped the team cruise to a comfortable win.
Playing in his first game since September, Saeed made an instant impact by producing a double-wicket maiden to start his season, removing both of Bollington’s most dangerous batsmen with magnificent deliveries.
A third breakthrough followed shortly after for Saeed (3-23) to leave the hosts reeling on 17-3 after just eight overs.
Barns were stopped in their tracks immediately after their latest scalp, being forced off due to a heavy downpour, while a fairly sloppy restart allowed Bollington some respite as they moved from 27-4 to 48-4 until the introduction of Charles Mills (1-13), who struck in his first over to see the back of Dave Paterson (15).
Two more dismissals for Wylie (3-32), including the stubborn Ged McKernan for 12, saw the home side slip to 56-7, although the pairing of Cameron Smail and Nathan Herbert ignited a resurgence, with 42 runs scored in the next 10 overs, without any further damage.
Jake Romer (1-17) found a way through Herbert’s defences for 13 before Dave Saddington got in on the act, but a fine final wicket partnership frustrated the visitors.
Smail and Oli Nolan added 29 until the latter eventually fell for 12 to Saddington (2-28), with the impressive Smail remaining undefeated on 35 as Bollington were bowled out for 130 inside 43 overs.
Barns’ response started well as openers Mike Hunter (21) and Clive Collins (12) put on 40 runs for the opening stand, but Bollington dragged themselves back into contention when Nolan (2-37) ended their stays at the crease.
The away team were stumbling at 50-3, but Hopper and Tom Entwistle steadied the ship, guiding HBCC to within 51 runs of victory with 23 overs remaining.
Despite Entwistle (10) being stumped off the bowling of Smail (2-31), Barns accelerated towards the required target as Hopper racked up boundaries at will, ably assisted by the more cautious Callum Schora (11*).
With 11 fours and a six, Hopper was the star of the show with a terrific unbeaten 58 off 54 balls, which inspired his side to their first win since the opening day of the season.

Batting Collapse Leads To First XI Loss

Sylvia and the Collins family wish to welcome all friends of Stuart to commemorate his life and times as President, Life Member and long-time Junior Chair.
A celebration will be held at Hale Barns Cricket Club on Saturday 22nd May 2021 at 10:00am, while the First XI fixture against Stockport CC will be sponsored by the Collins family, starting at 12 noon.
The gathering will be informal, so no black clothing is required.
Stuart joined the club in 1997 and took over as Junior Chair two years later, a position that he held for 16 years, developing many of the players that are now featuring regularly for the Firsts and Seconds.

Collins Continues Good Form During Second XI Defeat

Stuart was not only a ‘Big Man’, he also had a big personality and contributed so much to our wonderful cricket club.
For anyone in a voluntary role that lasts for a significant time span, complacency is always a danger.
It was not all sweetness and light because Stuart felt most strongly that juniors must be looked after properly by senior captains – they shouldn’t just make up the numbers because the team had a last minute cry off and then not be given an opportunity to bat or bowl.
Over the years, Stuart compiled an Annual Report that he presented to the AGM.
Apologies to anyone whose name has been overlooked.
After relegation from the Cheshire County Cricket League in 2001, the Club decided to bring in an overseas amateur.
Stuart embraced the changes introduced by ECB in 2005 to ensure that all young people who play cricket have a safe and positive experience.
In 2012, Stuart was deservedly elected as an Honorary Life Member and he was nominated for the Cheshire Cricket Board OSCA’s for ‘Getting the Game On’ the following year – a tribute to his efforts to provide junior cricket for literally hundreds of kids over the many years.
When Stuart finally stepped down as Junior Chair in 2015 and perhaps anticipated a more leisurely role, the Club nominated him as President.
However, it was not all hard work and no play.
Of all Stuart’s wonderful achievements over many years, surely his proudest moment would have been when the 1st XI took the field for the Cheshire Shield Final in 2018.
Stuart was the beating heart of the Club.
All members are all very saddened by his passing and once this dreadful pandemic has subsided, the Club would wish to remember Stuart with an event that respects the Collins’ family’s own wishes to celebrate his life and times.

Hicks & Smith Torment Mobberley To Make It Three In A Row For The Firsts - Hale Barns Cricket Club

Opening bowlers Ben Hicks and Sam Smith were too good for Mobberley CC as the duo bowled them out for a paltry 36 in just 19 overs, setting up a nine-wicket victory for Hale Barns First XI.
Hicks claimed six victims to take his season tally to 15 wickets from three matches, while Smith produced the first four dismissals to help Barns earn a third win in a row.
The visitors took just nine deliveries to break the deadlock, with Smith providing a sign of things to come with just four runs on the board.
Two more batsmen succumbed to Smith before Hicks finally joined the party in the 15th over, restricting Mobberley to 30-5.
Smith (4-13) was eyeing a maiden five-wicket haul, but he was ultimately denied by Hicks (6-21) as the left-armer claimed the final three scalps in the 19th over to clean up the hosts for just 36.
Chasing a low target, Smith and Joe Cooper made a watchful start until the former hit two consecutive fours to kick off the seventh over, although he was out two balls later for 20 with 15 runs still to get.
There were no further setbacks for away side as Khurram Hussain (4*) saw it home alongside Cooper (16*), who wrapped up the victory with a six to complete a nine-wicket victory in 9.

Hunter & Saddington Star As The Seconds Stay Unbeaten - Hale Barns Cricket Club

Hale Barns Second XI almost pulled off a second win in a row to start the 2021 season, but were forced to settle for a winning draw as they played out a high-scoring clash with Congleton CC.
Mike Hunter hit a classy 82 and Clive Collins also scored a half century, while Dave Saddington celebrated his first appearance since 2019 by taking four wickets during a terrific 15-over spell as the hosts finished their run chase 25 runs short with two wickets remaining.
Barns were put into bat on a seemingly flat deck and made the most of the favourable batting conditions, with openers Alex Castle and Collins both cashing in after surviving a couple of early drops.
Playing in just their second match as a combination, the pair remained unscathed for 22 overs and recorded a terrific century partnership to put the visitors in a commanding position.
However, with 106 on the board, the breakthrough was finally made when Castle fell an agonising three runs short of his maiden HBCC fifty, after being trapped lbw by Guy Baxendale for 47.
His downfall sparked a Congleton revival, with Baxendale turning one into three in fairly quick succession, including Collins for a patient 54, as the away side slipped to 123-3.
Hunter looked instantly assured, crashing his second delivery through the covers to the fence, but Barns continued to be pegged back with dismissals at the other end, including a fourth for Baxendale (4-54) as the score drifted to 153-5 with 11 overs remaining.
Andrew Hopper (14) struck a couple of boundaries in a brief cameo, but it was Hunter who got the innings back on track, punishing a couple of let offs by storming to a half century.
When he finally departed in the final over for an almost run-a-ball 82, HBCC had reclaimed the control and felt well set to pursue a victory at the halfway stage, as they set 231-8 from the allotted overs.
But Congleton got their run chase off to a flying start to put Barns on the backfoot, with Simon Prime and Stefan Stubbs taking advantage of the rapid outfield and short boundary on one side.
The pair scored significantly above the required rate in the opening 10 overs, amassing 59 runs without many troubles, but the introduction of Saddington finally brought some joy for the bowlers, dismissing Stubbs for 26.
Despite one end being tied up by the wily veteran, runs leaked at the other, with Prime racing to a half century, while new partner Rhys Lewis offered able assistance to guide the score to 120-1 with more than half of innings still remaining.
Another wicket for Saddington saw the back of Lewis (17) before the drinks interval, but it was the 33rd over when the game took a major twist, with Saddington seeing off the impressive Prime for a magnificent 77.
Barns were suddenly on the hunt for more wickets and found further success via Saddington, who claimed another victim before finishing his marathon stint with exceptional figures of 4-26.
Entering the last 10 overs of the game, all three results were in play as Congleton required 63 to win with six batsmen in reserve.
Adam Woodall was the prized scalp for HBCC, and his resistance finally came to an end on 36 when Ross Dunleavy got in on the act to set up an intriguing final four overs.
However, despite Wylie (2-65) and Dunleavy (2-24) both doubling their tallies, Congleton held on to share the spoils, completing their innings on 206-8.

Ben Hicks delivered an extraordinary individual performance with bat and ball as Hale Barns First XI secured a second successive win after crushing Upton CC by 214 runs.
Hicks hit 77 and then took eight wickets in a devastating exhibition of fast bowling to help Barns produce one of the most dominant victories in club history.
Barns took the initiative from the off as opening pair Joe Cooper and Sam Smith scored 40 runs from the first eight overs, although the latter was sent on his way by Chris Stowell-Smith for 15.
Cooper made a run-a-ball 29 before also departing to Stowell-Smith, while Khurram Hussain added 26 as the hosts moved onto 83-3 from 21 overs.
After reaching the milestone, Hicks went up the gears with some lusty blows, striking four sixes and seven fours in total as he reached 77 from 85 balls before falling to Liam Sundve (2-84), who also dismissed Christian Dodson for a rapid 22.
The game had been in the balance at 119-5 before Hicks’ destructive knock, which put Barns in complete control having passed 200, and they still had time for further contributions from James Guest (25) and Tommy Smith (13).
Stowell-Smith (4-62) doubled his wicket tally in the latter stages, but he could not prevent HBCC posting an imposing total of 242-9.
Hicks then took over the game with the ball, claiming two victims in his second over to reduce the visitors to 4-2.
The left-armer was running riot, registering three consecutive wicket maidens to secure his five-wicket haul, while Phil Dodd also got in on the act to leave the away side in a disastrous state on 16-6.
Dodd (2-12) gained a second breakthrough to continue Upton’s free fall, but the day belonged to Hicks as he carried on his dazzling display with a sixth dismissal.
And it was fitting that he concluded proceedings, removing the last two batsmen to leave Upton all out on 28, ending with incredible figures of 8-7 from 7.

Late Charge By Rabbani Leads Thirds To T20 Win - Hale Barns Cricket Club

Fantastic late hitting from Farhan Rabbani sealed a first win of the season for Hale Barns Third XI, as they pulled off a four-wicket victory over Bowdon CC in the T20 Cup.
The hosts appeared to be cruising with Barns six wickets down and well below the required run rate, but Rabbani’s blistering 36 turned the result on its head.
Bowling first, HBCC failed to make any inroads early on as openers Henry Murray and Neel Deshpande cruised to a half century partnership, building the foundations for a solid total.
The pair took the score to 78 before Junaid Iqbal (1-26) finally broke the deadlock, finding a way through Murray’s defences for a well-made 53 off 36 balls.
The innings ended with James Moran (13) being run out by Rabbani, but Mahedevan remained unbeaten on 41 as the home team posted a respectable 161-3 from the allotted overs.
Adil Khan and Suhail Anjum got Barns off to a flying start, putting on 41 runs in four overs.
Momentum swung in Bowdon’s favour, though, when the visitors collapsed to 97-6, with Khan departing for a run-a-ball 41.
Two sixes from Iqbal helped the cause, but it was Rabbani who produced a captain’s knock, firing HBCC back into contention with an array of attacking strokes that left the team needing eight runs from the final over.
The pair finished the job, with Iqbal ending 19 not out and Rabbani striking an excellent 36 from just 16 deliveries to secure a fantastic win.

It was an action-packed start to the season for Hale Barns Third XI, who tied their T20 Cup opener with Grappenhall CC, but suffered defeat due to wickets lost.
Abdul Rehman struck a quickfire 32 and bowled a terrific final over, while Suhail Anjum was the pick of the bowlers as Barns experienced a useful runout ahead of the upcoming league campaign.
HBCC were put into bat and suffered the early loss of captain Farhan Rabbani (1) with just seven runs on the board, but Rehman and Ahmed Choudhry (10) solidified the innings with a promising partnership.
Rehman was in destructive form, hitting three maximums in his swift cameo, but Richard Wiles (3-33) removed both batters in quick succession to halt Barns’ momentum.
Despite a fluent 18 from Adil Khan, the hosts slumped to 80-7 after a sensational four-over spell from Fameesh Azeez, who produced exceptional figures of 4-9, while late contributions from Muzzamil Tariq (18) and Haaziq Choudhry (10) kept the game in the balance, carrying the total to 121-9.
A stunning start to the run chase put Barns firmly in the driving seat, as they restricted Grappenhall to 0-3 from the opening seven deliveries, with Tariq (2-16) kicking things off with a double-wicket maiden before Khan struck with his first ball.
David Coyne and Mark Tyerman delivered a resolute response to drag the away side back into contention, taking the score to 62 until Coyne (26) became one of two victims for Anjum (2-9), who bowled a remarkably economical four-over stint.
Khan (2-20) returned to the attack and collected the vital dismissal of Tyerman for 39 with 35 runs left to get and four wickets to spare.
However, a breakthrough for Rehman (1-16), followed by a dot ball, set up a one-ball shootout, which ended with Rabbani running out Seed for 17 and leaving the two teams tied, although Grappenhall’s extra wicket in hand secured them the win.

Debutant Duo Castle & Hopper Inspire Seconds To Winning Start

Following a lengthy winter offseason, cricket finally returns to Brooks Drive next week as training kicks off on Thursday 8th April.
U13s and U15s will train from 5:00pm to 7:00pm each Thursday, while the slot for seniors is 6:00pm to 8:00pm on the same day.
Meanwhile, sessions for U9s and U11s will take place on Fridays from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
We look forward to welcoming everyone back to the club ahead of an exciting season.
